The viKarious Society is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2023 to honor the memory and continue the work of Kari Kirkland Thacker, a lifetime educator in Central Kentucky.
Kari was a strong advocate for educational opportunities for our local youth, and was always the number one fan of her students. She supported many kids throughout their academic and sports careers. She loved being involved in her community and supporting local causes.
Kari was a beacon of light, in what could otherwise seem like a dark world. The viKarious Society was formed for all of us who have lost a light in our life; so that our loved ones goals, kindness, and generosity may live on vicariously through our efforts in our local community.
The viKarious Society views higher education as an agent of change for individuals, families and local communities. We envision a community that recognizes the importance of educational attainment and ensures positive educational outcomes are accessible to all. The viKarious Society also focuses on providing support to local youth programs that advance educational and personal growth, so that all individuals have the opportunity to succeed in our community.
Kari was always extremely proud to be from Fleming County, Kentucky. For our inaugural year, The viKarious Society offered scholarships to three individuals graduating from Kari's alma mater in 2024. The application was open to all Fleming County High School Seniors who will be going on to any type of higher education. Applications were submitted anonymously to the selection committee.
The Kari Kirkland Thacker "Once a Panther, Always a Panther" Memorial Scholarships were awarded on May 9th, 2024. A luncheon for the recipients will be held on June 1, 2024.
One mission of The viKarious Society is to provide tools and resources to help support established youth programs within our community. This will help ensure the longevity of programs with quantifiable positive results in the community.
Kari loved to see students excel in any area they showed interest; whether it be academia, the arts, sports or extracurricular activities. The viKarious Society follows her lead and highlights students who show excellency in a particular subject, hobby or skill.
Since inception, The viKarious Society has focused on helping students in our area to prepare for their future. It is our goal to promote confidence in our youth and instill values that encourage community involvement and collaboration.
